Last night, we had vegetables for dinner again.
At the mere sight of the green food, memory brought to mind something very familiar. “Bahay Kubo” is a Filipino folk song; its Tagalog lyrics is basically a rundown of the vegetables that would be found around a certain bahay kubo or nipa hut. And some of what were mentioned in the song was now on our table. My curiosity took over.
“Anong maluluto sa mga gulay ng ‘Bahay Kubo’?”
Basically, I asked what recipe could use the vegetables mentioned in the song. The family began telling me all the varied recipes they could think of, mostly vegetable stews, soups, and wraps. I did not make myself clear.
“Anong maluluto na gamit lahat ng gulay ng ‘Bahay Kubo’?”
Once I asked if there is a recipe that uses all of the vegetables, they looked shocked. The consensus is: there isn’t a recipe. And they are of the opinion that it might taste bad. So off to Google I went. Either my research are as bad as what they think of the possible recipe or they were right in first place. That or no one has dared to cook such a feat.
