Hi Sir!
I’d like to tell you that I’m finally reading that book you gave me a couple of Christmases ago. And let me tell you, The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco is indeed challenging.
For one thing, for a small book, it’s a very thick one. And with a small-sized font! But enough about technicalities. Every time I read this book—which I haven’t finished, I think I have 3/5 done—I seriously wish I knew every Latin word I come across.
Do you know Latin? I wish you told how got across everything Latin in the book.
At first, I was listing down every single phrase and sentence so that I could check out their English translation. But the further I got with the book, the longer the passages became. Sometimes, they’re a whole page! So what I do is just power through the whole thing. For record, I read the Latin parts, even though I have no idea what they mean. But not knowing what they mean makes those words look like blurs on the page.
Just to be clear, I am enjoying the mystery. And the best part of this? They get to be actually lost in a library of epic proportions! How cool is that? And no! I haven’t—and I try not to—seen the movie. I will after I am through with the book, though.
Latin aside, I am beginning to see why this is your favorite. And I will finish it. Hopefully before Christmas this year.
