I, the Replacement | Daily Prompt: A Mystery Wrapped in an Engima

Tell us something most people probably don’t know about you.

I’m not supposed to be here.

Decades ago, my parents were set on having only a certain number of kids. And the last one was well on his—or her—way. But that kid decided not to take up the opportunity to star in this show. Didn’t even bother to go through rehearsals!

So my parents took it upon themselves to make a replacement.

And that is where I came in.

Every now and again, when I am reminded of this fact, I imagine the life that was not supposed to be mine. I see situations where two people—neither one me—both faceless and nameless, a boy and a girl make choices, go through phases, and go grow up. And only one of them was the original. Who that is remains a mystery, until this very day.

I don’t quite get it, but sometimes things need no explanation. What we do know is that there was a divine intervention on the day you came. What more assurance do you need? *hugs*

  2. Ah, but the main thing is that you are here. Excuse my language, but “fuck the naysayers”. You are the one alive and being amazing, Even if you were intended as a “replacement”, the only person you’ve replaced is…well…no one. You are yourself and the one who is striving to the stars. And in that aspect, YOU are the original; everything else is a figment.
