Request Granted

You know the feeling when a favorite of yours grants your request?

In mid August, I was surprised when, while scrolling through my Facebook news feed, Kumori had posted an update. It wasn’t about an existing product of theirs. It was about a new item. I didn’t need to know the name. The photo itself was more than enough to tell me what it was.

The Melon Pan is now on their shelves!

For otaku-foodies, the melon pan is one of the more famous breads in and from Japan. Round and sweet but what makes it recognizable are the crisscross markings on its top, which resemble the fruit. Many Japanese bakeries include it in their everyday lineup of offerings.

Kumori has created the bread that is soft to the bite with subtle sweetness and yet has that crunch across the markings. They laced their version with cookie dough, which adds more flavor. Besides the Melon Pan, there is also the Coffee Pan, which is the darker variety.

While customers could buy any variety of the two pans as is, they could order from the cashier a Melon Ice Cream Pan. It’s the bread turned into a sandwich by adding two scoops of cold, creamy vanilla ice cream. If you could temper yourself, you could do what I did: buy a Melon Pan and a Melon Ice Cream Pan, take one of the two scoops then put it on the Melon Pan, giving you two Melon Ice Cream Pans!

Of course, I had one other treat. I ordered Nama Choco Sand Chocolate, which was a sharp change from the light delights of the pans. The slice was, like most Kumori breads, soft but is rich and steep with chocolaty goodness, mostly from the thin layer of ganache in the middle. I think I could eat a whole roll myself. That or it was just my hunger talking.

For the curious, the Melon Pan and the Coffee Pan are available in all branches but the Melon Ice Cream Pan is only available at the Kumori Café at the SM North EDSA. While there is a newly opened Kumori Café at the UP Town Center, I still have no confirmation if the Melon Pan Ice Cream is offered there. Now that I think of it, wonder if they’ll make a Coffee Ice Cream Pan, something to channel the affogato. To me, the idea has potential. Wonder if that’s the next request they’ll grant.

    1. Yes, the UPTC branch is up and running. From what I remember, they opened just last week.
And they have an item or two available only at that branch.
Hope you get to try their treats.

      1. Oh, I see. Thanks for the tip; haven’t really explored UP Town’s new wing recently.

          1. Yes, they just finished a new wing (with H&M, Uniqlo, and a soon-to-open Mango).

A lot of food spots mushrooming too: Tuan Tuan, Le Souffle, Chimara Neo-Vegan Cafe, and more. Even a Pablo Cheesecake outlet.

            1. Pablo conquers the north! That is good news. Hope they open come holiday season.
Le Souffle? For a while there, I confused it for another restaurant with an almost similar name at Century Mall.
And a Neo-Vegan Cafe? Somehow, I am both curious and iffy about it.

              Thanks for the updates, Monch!

              1. Same wishes for Pablo. Actually, that’s the restaurant at Century City Mall – and Chef Miko Aspiras has heard the prayers of the northerners; thus, the UPTC outlet.

                You’re welcome. 🙂

                1. A northern branch?!
Now that is wonderful news! More reasons to visit UPTC.
                  Again, thank you, Monch.

    1. Although I myself haven’t tasted Coffee Pan, I think it’ll be just as delicious as the others.
