Eating More When With Friends

Don’t you find yourself eating a lot more when you’re with friends?

That’s true for me. Like one Sunday, I met with two friends of mine at UP Town Center. Our first spot was a coffee place where we had hot drinks and light snacks. After having had enough of the sun hitting our eyes, we decided to go to another restaurant. I knew exactly where to take them—okay, not exactly because the only thing my source said was that it was on the ground floor and UP Town Center is a fairly huge place. So we had to walk for a while, which wasn’t that bad of an exercise. Then, I spotted it.

For a long time now, I wanted to dine at Kko Kko. I like Korean food but the one item I had my eyes one was too much for me. I needed reinforcements to finish it. And it was the perfect opportunity to try their Chicken Cheese Fondue.

We asked for sweet chili chicken and cheese fries. It took about ten minutes for the meal to be prepared. We held on to the menu – which they presented on a tablet – for a while longer, thinking if we should have something else or not.

Once the fondue plate arrived, our excitement built. As usual with me, I sampled each piece first before dipping into the melted cheese. I instantly loved the chicken and the fries; the former had the right blend of sweet and spicy but what surprised all three of us was the latter because it was cheesy indeed but also spicy. I don’t know if the kitchen staff made a mistake but none of us were complaining because we couldn’t get enough the spicy cheese fries.

Personally, the onion rings were meh. Then again, I’ve never been a fan of it.

Chicken with melted cheese was good. Spicy cheese fries in melted is also good. But spicy cheese fries dipped in the chicken sauce then in the melted cheese was a whole other level of savory we did not expect. The second we discovered it, it was the only thing we did until all the sauce was gone.

But good food discoveries did not stop there. Out of curiosity, I took a piece of the top of the bread bowl and ran it over the fondue. I already knew the taste of the melted cheese. What surprised me was the bread, which by itself was just as good. Even though it was understandably soggy by then, it was still an understated winner. One of the waiters asked if we wanted to have the bowl cut and we said yes.

With all the onion rings, chicken pops, and fries gone and the bread bowl reserved for later, we agreed to return one of the restaurants we spotted earlier and have dessert there.

So, I guided them back to Nono’s. We ordered two slices of two different cakes: Blueberry Cheesecake and Honey Crunch. The former was soft, moist, and did not skimp on real blueberry pieces or the blueberry sauce. The latter was true to its name; it had golden brittles that gave more than enough texture for the dessert.

The only consistent complaint we had that day: we drank and ate too much. But that is what usually happens when with friends.

Ah, Nono’s – the one that replaced In-N-Out Burger there at UP Town! 🙂

      1. All I remember are pop-up stores, like the ones they had at BGC and Greenhills.

Yep, one of the flagship tenants when UPTC opened. Folded up after low customer traffic.

        1. That’s too bad. Guess they would’ve been better off in one of the bigger malls or at BGC. We can never have too many burger joints here. XD

Oh, wait! It wasn’t In-N-Out; rather, Triple O’s!

            Apologies for the mistake. 😦

            1. No worries. I remember Triple O’s–but their branch at SM Megamall. Their burgers were good. There was one type I was waiting to try but was fresh out for the day; can no longer remember what it was. Never returned because the branch was out of the way.
